Memorial Service for Victims of ATL Shooting (뉴욕한인회 아틀란타 희생자 추모식)

On March 26 (the #StopAsianHate National Day of Action and Healing), KAAGNY held a memorial service at its headquarters to pay respects to the victims of the Atlanta murder spree and heal as a community. The memorial service also doubled as a viewing of the Worldwide Virtual Vigil hosted by KA Vote and Korean American Coalition (KAC) - Metro Atlanta, which KAAGNY and KAC National co-chaired. Over 400 organizations voiced support for the Vigil, and over 4,000 people across the globe tuned in for the livestream on Friday evening.

Thousands of people gathered virtually for a worldwide vigil that took place on Friday, March 26th (the #StopAsianHate National Day of Action and Healing) to unite as a global community as we pay respects to the deceased, find communal healing and hope in the face of heightened violence that has traumatized the entire Asian American community, and call for solidarity under a banner of anti-racism.
 

Jamaica Solidarity Rally with 100 Suits & KAAGNY (흑인 인권단체100 SUITS, 아시안 증오범죄 반대 기자회견)

On March 25, community leaders and local elected officials gathered in Jamaica, Queens for a Solidarity Event to denounce the surge of anti-Asian attacks and violence. The rally was organized by Kevin Livingston, the Founder and President of 100 Suits, in conjunction with KAAGNY, leaders from Southeast Queens, and allies. 
 

Allyships & Solutions Against Racism, Discrimination, and Hate (타민족연대 인종차별 대응 및 해결 방안 모색 토론회)

In light of the growing anti-Asian sentiment and hate incidents across the US, KAAGNY facilitated a conversation among community leaders (representing the Black, Latinx, Jewish, and Asian American communities) to share insights on how best to combat discrimination, joined by elected officials to provide resources at the federal, state, and local levels. The panelists were joined by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Rep. Grace Meng, State Senator John Liu, Queens DA Melinda Katz, and NYC Councilman Peter Koo.

On the morning of March 18, Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Action Network held a rally at the House of Justice in Harlem, NY with AAPI community leaders and NYC mayoral candidates to denounce anti-Asian discrimination and hate incidents. 
 

March First Korean Independence Celebration (제102주년 3.1절 기념식)

On March 1, KAAGNY held its annual event to celebrate the 102nd Anniversary of the March First Korean Independence Movement. The March First Movement (삼일운동) of 1919 was comprised of a series of grass-roots demonstrations of peaceful protest for Korean sovereignty from imperial rule. It was the largest uprising against Japanese rule during the colonial period. KAAGNY honored the Gwangbok Association of New York at the event for their dedication to preserving the legacy of Korean independence fighters.

102 Years On: The March First Movement in NYC (뉴욕시 독립유적지 소개, 김애리 부회장)

The annual Gala is KAAGNY’s main fundraising event which supports and ensures the success of KAAGNY programs for the coming year. Reflecting this year’s theme, “Stronger Together: Community Building in the COVID-19 Era,” KAAGNY has focused its efforts and resources on providing assistance to members of our society who are experiencing an array of difficulties and challenges, building solidarity with other communities of color, and raising Korean American voices in the civic process.
